COVID-19 and Kids

Hello Franklin County Families,

Wondering what to say to your kids about COVID-19?  Here is a little information and some helpful links to assist you in reducing their fears and anxieties.

  • Tell the truth in an age appropriate way and correct any misinformation your children may have heard.  Start by asking them what they know and what they've heard.
  • Give them reassurance that everything is being done to protect all of us.
  • Be a Germ-busting Superhero by making sure that they know that we can all be superheroes by practicing social distancing, learning proper hand washing techniques, and by catching our coughs and sneezes in a tissue or in our elbow.
  • Take care of your own anxieties and fears so that you don't project them onto your children.
  • Stick to a routine.  Children thrive best if they know what's coming and what to expect.  Keeping to a routine is familiar and reassuring.

MOST IMPORTANTLY - If you or your child is having extreme anxiety or behavioral concerns, reach out for help.  Call the Youth Connections Hotline above.

PBS has some helpful information and links to some awesome videos.

The CDC has guidance on what to say and how to say it.

Bright Horizons does a great job of giving you sample Questions and Answers.
